I've been looking for a new personal project for a couple of years now. My last project was a 32 image project photographed between 2008 and 2009 called, "I dance..." and was an exploration of what motivates dancers to dance. I knew I wanted my next project to focus on dancers/performers as well, but I wasn't sure how. I have a classical dance background myself, and have been photographing the ATS/Tribal Fusion belly dance world for nearly a decade. My immersion into the ATS/Fusion world made me very aware of how wonderfully accepting that community is. All bodies are welcome into the dance family. It's about coming together as a community and loving the dance.
My husband took me out on a date night recently to see Bad Influence Burlesque. I've had feather edge connection to the burlesque community as I once did an art show at Bombshell Betty's San Francisco studio 10 years ago, so I was excited to see this show knowing that some of the performers where her students. Long story short, the show inspired me as I realized that I was watching a collection of performers of all body types and backgrounds, owning that stage and commanding the spotlight in much the same way as the belly dancers I've photographed over the years have done, and it hit me that in this time where there is active conversation over all bodies being beautiful and capable, that here was my story for my project. I knew I needed to create a new project around the powerful and beautiful spirit of these communities of performers who are like-minded in promoting body positivity and body acceptance.
The project has begun shooting. If you're interested in participating, please send me an email about being placed on the shooting calendar. The project is currently open ended.
