June Specials

Dads & Graduate Sessions

It's that time of year again.  The end of another school year and the beginning of summer!  With June comes two great things: celebrations of our little ones taking significant steps toward adulthood, and celebrating the men who help our little ones along their path of life and who are often, although not always, known by the name Dad.

Life is always marching forward.  There is never a better time than now to take a moment out and celebrate the milestones in your life now.   Celebrate the men in your life and the transitions from child to adult by booking a photo session for your loved ones with me.

In honor of these two June events, I’m offering Daddy & Me as well as graduate portrait sessions through the entirety of June for an all-inclusive price of $200. Sessions can be done on location or in studio.

Headshots for College Grads

I'm also offering $75 headshots for new college graduates.  2 outfits.  2 finished images.  Get those professional profiles polished up and ready to go!

Mother's Day - Mama & Me Special http://thenakedartisan.com/blog/2017/5/mothers-day---mama-me-special

As a mother, I know, first hand, that mothers have two general positions when it comes to photography. The first is that we are the ones most often capturing the family memories. Whether we have our smart phone camera or a professional DSLR, we’re the ones documenting our family life so we can both revel in the memories and share them with those we love.

The other position is one of hiding from being photographed ourselves. I don’t know a mom who doesn’t have a host of reasons why they can’t step in front of the camera, myself included. We’re wearing our mom pants. We don’t have makeup on. We need to loose (X) pounds. Or we simply just don’t like ourselves in that moment.

Here’s a bit of magical thinking that us mothers need to embrace. Our children love us. They don’t care that we didn’t brush our hair, don’t go to the gym, are wearing yesterday’s yoga pants, hate the way we look or feel in pictures. Our children are under a spell of wonder and don’t see our flaws. They love to squish up against our soft parts as it makes them feel warm and safe. They dance in our laughter. They think our crazy hair is beautiful and our smiles make them smile, too.

Moms, we’re the ones judging us. We’re the ones saying we’re not worthy. In the years to come, our kids just want to have memories to hold. They want to see the tiny versions of themselves alongside their ever so precious mommy. They are not going to look at an image and judge us. They are going to look at an image and remember how much they love us and us them.

So, I invite you, Mom, to celebrate Mother’s Day with a photo session with you and your children. I also invite those of you who still have your moms in your lives to consider having a photo session celebrating you and your mom. We all know time only ever marches forward. I invite you to put aside the litany of reasons why you can’t be photographed now, and spend an hour with me and your most precious loves celebrating one of the most powerful relationships in nature: the bond between mother and child.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I’m offering Mama & Me sessions through the entirety of May for an all-inclusive price of $200. Sessions can be done on location or in studio. To request further details, or to schedule your session, please visit http://thenakedartisan.com/contact.html

I will reschedule soon.

If you're looking for an opportunity to update your professional head shots, get some pointers on improving your resume by a Silicon Valley talent professional, and meet some great professionals from a cross section of the valley, then you may want to consider reserving a spot at my first head shot and networking event! Spread the word! 25 spaces available!

Description

Head shots are no longer reserved for C-staff, real estate agents, and performers. With the advent of LinkedIn, personal websites, blogs, and social media, there is a steadily growing demand for defined personal branding which is summarized by a good head shot. Whether taken in a studio, office, or on-location, these photos are becoming a necessity to help individuals stand out in crowd or cloud.

The Naked Artisan Photography will be hosting an afternoon of photography and networking at the co-working space and startup incubator, ActionSpot, in San Jose. If you work or play in Silicon Valley, you probably already know that a great head shot or profile image is becoming a staple of a strong professional or personal profile. Come network with other professionals while having your head shot taken or updated.

Reservations are $75 and purchases you:

  • Two professional head shots (can be two different looks if you choose). The digital files of your modestly retouched head shots will be delivered to you via following the event.
  • The opportunity to meet and network with other professionals in the community as well as the chance to learn more about ActionSpot and their offerings. Bring your business cards and flyers to share with others!
  • Receive some pointers on improving your resume from a Silicon Valley talent professional
  • Get makeup touchups before your head shots by members of Rose Hill and Crew
  • 10% of each ticket will be donated to our local chapter of Meals on Wheels of America to help support the needs of senior citizens in our community.

Space is limited to 25 participants, so make sure to reserve your space now. You will receive instructions on how to sign up for a specific head shot time slot. Studio and outdoor options are available for your photos.

#Iamagoddess - Deborah http://thenakedartisan.com/blog/2017/2/-iamagoddess---deborah #Iamagoddess - Deborah#Iamagoddess - DeborahWhat does the phrase "Body Positive" mean to you?
Accepting your body and the changes it will experience as you move through life with grace. Being kind to yourself about things that society may make you dwell on , such as stretch marks, weight gain, wrinkles etc.

Why is performing important to you?
Performing allows me to move through my fear and negative associations I've formed with my body . Pushing through and sharing my expression with the audience always ends with support, love and renewed sense of " I can do this. I am beautiful no matter what ". It's also just plain fun :)

What was it about your chosen art form that drew you?
I've always been a performer, even in my childhood I loved the spotlight. Bellydance and Burlesque happen to be my 2 chosen forms for now. Bellydance because I love exotic dance forms and learning about other cultures and Burlesque for the pure , raw sex appeal . Being able to feel confident, sexy and supported is totally empowering.

What has your journey to body positivity been like?
Still going through ups and downs. Like many I've gained weight throughout the years and it's a struggle to be ok with it and yet be ok with wanting to change. Questioning if my motives for change are from a health standpoint or a disgust standpoint ( because I've had both). Some days I cry when I see my performance photos because of my perceived flaws and other times I feel I'm a damn tigress. It really is an ongoing journey that I hope continues to move toward a more positive end.

What, if any, impression(s) do you hope your audience walks away from your performances with?
"Damn shes sexy !" for Burlesque is always a win.
I love to have fun with both my dance forms, so I hope that people who watch me see that I'm totally immersed and enjoying what I'm doing.
Also that anyone can do it, you just need to smile and have fun .

What do you want people to know about your story as it relates to participating in this project?
I want people to know that it's hard to get past your bodies perceived flaws, that it's hard to really listen when others tell you you're beautiful. And that's ok. You don't have to believe it every time, but smile and say "thank you" before that little voice in your head responds with "really? because I thought I looked (insert body shaming here)". I hope that by getting outside my comfort zone that I will inspire others to do the same. To dance, free your mind and your body from the mental shackles of shame. Life is too short. Share who you are with the world, no matter what size. <3

#PurpleAmazon - Lizzy http://thenakedartisan.com/blog/2017/1/-purpleamazon---lizzy #PurpleAmazon - Lizzy#PurpleAmazon - LizzyWhat does the phrase "Body Positive" mean to you?
It means embracing one's body in whatever form it takes and finding beauty the variability of physical appearances. (Plus, resisting the urge to associate personal self-worth with the unreasonable standards commonly found in the media.)

Why is performing important to you?
Performing is one of the main ways I find balance in my life. My sassy and extroverted stage persona balances out my introverted, to the point of being misanthropic, off stage personality. As a Dark Fusion dancer, performing allows me to express and embrace all of those emotions society views as "negative". Thus, performing gives me an outlet for my "dark" side and provides a balance to the more socially acceptable "light" side usually found in my interactions with others.

What was it about your chosen art form that drew you?
I have loved to dance since I was a small child, but was not physically built for being a classical dancer. When I found belly dance as an adult, it reawakened my passion for dance while allowing me to develop my personal style to fit my body and my artistic needs. My large, inflexible, curvy frame stopped being a detriment and became the source of my power. Within the world of belly dance, my personal sensibilities and need for unstructured self-expression led me to Dark Fusion. In short, dance has become my version of therapy.

What has your journey to body positivity been like?
My quest to love and accept my body has been a constant uphill battle, and I'm still fighting it each and every day. Belly dance has been a huge part of my journey. There is nothing so wonderful as putting your body out there in a performance or even class setting, and then getting so much love and positivity from friends, family, students, teachers, and even random members of the audience. That said, I can walk out on stage and dance with total confidence, but if I watch a video afterward my ingrained response is to judge myself as "fat" and "ugly". It's getting better little by little, but I still have a long way to go.

What, if any, impression(s) do you hope your audience walks away from your performances with?
My only real hope is that my audience will be entertained for a few fleeting moments. If my art speaks to them on a deeper level I'm ecstatic, but mostly I just don't want to be boring. One of the best things that audience members occasionally walk away with is an altered perception of the physical characteristics of a dancer. I REALLY don't look like the average Fusion dancer, so if I can break that stereotype for someone I am thrilled. Curvy women have told me that they didn't think they could be Fusion dancers, but I proved them wrong.

What do you want people to know about your story as it relates to participating in this project?
Life is Art! All we can do is embrace the materials we are given and create something beautiful. My personal adventure has been learning to love my body, because in the world of dance it is my greatest resource.

Love the maternity gown look? So do I. http://thenakedartisan.com/blog/2016/12/love-the-maternity-gown-look-so-do-i Happy Monday before Christmas, Friends.  I have officially closed my holiday photography season when it comes to shooting.  As I look forward to 2017, I wanted to introduce something a bit new for my future maternity clients.  As most of you all with Pinterest accounts know, the maternity gown look is very popular right now.  The hardest part for me as a small, and growing studio is how to create similar looks without buying and storing a plethora of dresses to ensure I can accommodate any mama at any size...you should get the idea.  I can't imagine a closet big enough for all of that fashion!

I have been a fan of the old fashioned fabric drape or fabric wrap.  Fabrics are versatile as I can use them as a bean bag baby backdrop or as a maternity wrap.  This weekend I was able to play around with some fabric wrapping and a hand made (yes, by me!) tutu.  I am thrilled with the result.  I look forward to bringing more to my maternity clients as we move into 2017.

My beautiful mom-to-be came into my studio this weekend to help me model these looks and do some maternity images in studio, which I do not get to do very often.  The last shot, is one of her own saris which I invited her to wear during her photo session.  I look forward to sharing more images form this shoot soon.

A great year of cakes and smashes. http://thenakedartisan.com/blog/2016/12/a-great-year-of-cakes-and-smashes I got to photograph some fantastic cakes smashes this year.  Celebrating birthdays with little ones (and some not so little ones) is really one of my favorite kind of photo sessions.  I developed a relationship with a fantastic bakery who I've come to trust and rely on for beautiful cakes made to fit my set designs.  Annette Galetti of Ana's Bakery is a joy to work with.  Her skill is top notch and her cakes, delicious!  I'm so happy to have a fantastic collaborator in her, and I look forward to seeing what 2017 brings for both of us.

The Magic of Veil - #PastiesandZills Extra http://thenakedartisan.com/blog/2016/12/the-magic-of-veil---pastiesandzills-extra San Jose, CA Portrait Photographer

Nicole gave me many amazing shots during her project photo shoot including other stunning veil images, but this one took my breath when I saw it.  She's lit beautifully.  Her shoulders are relaxed.  She's got the most beautiful smile on her face.  The veil is frozen perfectly in space and time.  It's an exultant image.  I've photographed many dancers and many veils, but there's something special and different about this image.  So because of that, I'm celebrating this photograph with it's own blog post.  I hope you enjoy this image as much as I do.

#anybellycandance - Nicole http://thenakedartisan.com/blog/2016/11/-anybellycandance---nicole #anybellycandance - Nicole#anybellycandance - NicoleWhat does the phrase "Body Positive" mean to you?
Any action or attitude that helps break down the preconceived notion of what a "perfect" body is.
Why is performing important to you?
I love to show people the beauty and emotional complexity of belly dance. Dance is also an incredibly fulfilling way to bring some joy and give a little bit back to the world.
What was it about your chosen art form that drew you?
I love that belly dance can express the full range of human emotion, and in limitless ways. It's just such an expansive dance with so many styles and variations.
What has your journey to body positivity been like?
I started belly dancing when my first child was 8 months old. I was at my heaviest weight, with loads of new stretch marks and the dreaded mummy tummy. Through belly dance I went from "I hate my belly" to "Check out what me belly can do!"
What, if any, impression(s) do you hope your audience walks away from your performances with?
I want them to feel inspired, and like belly dance is something that they could do and enjoy.
What do you want people to know about your story as it relates to participating in this project?
Belly dance helped me get in touch with powerful, confident side of myself that I didn't even know existed. Every woman deserves to feel that way.

Just 60-70 years ago there was not a safe space for women to express themselves and perform sexually in a way that was empowering, fun, safe, and totally up to them and in their control. I deeply value the right and ability I have in my country today to be able to get up on a stage with other amazing ladies and strip, perform, express myself and have fun, and do this all while knowing that I am safe, respected and empowered. That is a huge blessing that I never take for granted.

What was it about your chosen art form that drew you?
I love that the heart of burlesque is sticking it to the man, and going against social conventions about what is appropriate, beautiful, sexy, acceptable, and ok. It is a truly revolutionary and activist art form in my opinion. It also allows me to express my sensuality in a way that is empowering, fun, involves community, and is safe.

What has your journey to body positivity been like?
WOW! Big question! It has been a roller coaster and I have been fiercely dedicated to empowering myself and those around me because we live in a society that disempowers us very intensely with regard to our body image, self-esteem, and out sexuality and gender expression.

What, if any, impression(s) do you hope your audience walks away from your performances with?
I hope they walk away with a feeling of being totally empowered, inspired and fired up about how who they are is OK, beautiful, worthy of love and expression, and they can do whatever the fuck they want!!!

What do you want people to know about your story as it relates to participating in this project?
My story has been a long an bumpy one that began at day one! Everything I have experienced in this lifetime has brought me to this point of being fiercely committed to empowering and freeing myself and others to love, embrace and celebrate their body and everything about who they are. Women especially are so beaten down in our society with ads, media of all types, and the deep cultural heterosexism and misogyny that is rooted in our culture, giving us subtle and not-so-subtle messages about what we should be and look like and how we should compromise who we are for the ego of others. Being a performer, therapist, empowerment coach and teacher, and participating in awesome empowering projects like this one are all a part of my passion for empowering all humans, no matter what gender they identify with or were assigned to at birth. Empowerment, love, and radical self-acceptance and self-trust all start with each of us as individuals and with how we choose to relate to ourselves. Choose to relate to yourself as the powerful, miraculous, worthy, gorgeous badass that you are.

I am all for people taking back and owning their power and their Divine birthright to unconditional love, acceptance, and self-expression. I have pulled and grown myself out of low self-esteem, and self-hate and rejection, into a person who is whole-heartedly committed to self-love and acceptance, forgiveness and reclaiming our birthright for love and enoughness! And I am dedicating my life to helping others coming back to that empowerment and freedom!

What does the phrase "Body Positive" mean to you?
Loving, accepting and celebrating all body types.

Embracing all body types and celebrating our differences!

Why is performing important to you?
As a professional performing troupe, we love showing that anyone can do what we do. There is no age or size limit. Just dance!

What was it about your chosen art form that drew you?
You do not need to be the perceived social standard of beauty to be a performer. No matter what the performance media is in, if everyone looked the same and did the same moves in the same costuming it would be extremely boring. Diversity in performers means diversity in performances.
We love how we can change who we are with a costume or a song or an event theme. We are called Progressive Fusion because you never know what we are going to do next!

What has your journey to body positivity been like?
Since 2006 we have been an ever evolving troupe of many ages, body shapes, personalities and skill. We are a very close group of women who celebrate each other both in and out of the dance. There is no shaming, just encouraging.

We all have our personal journeys, but as a troupe, we thrive on love!!

Well, that and booze.

What, if any, impression(s) do you hope your audience walks away from your performances with?
DAMN THEY ARE FANTASTIC!! I WANT TO BE JUST LIKE THEM!

Sister Sirens are well known in the dance community for our sassy, snarky style and how close knit we are. We want the audience to have fun because we are having fun too! Watching us should be a relaxing romp that will put a smile on your face and have you thinking "Hey, I can do that too!"

What do you want people to know about your story as it relates to participating in this project?
Always evolve. Our style changes. Our troupe members change. Our costumes change. But it is our love for each other that gives us that drive to go out there and create magic.

Although, the sparkly things don't hurt either!

Body Positive means being confident in your body.

Why is performing important to you?
Performing is important to me because I like making the audience feel happy. If I can inspire an audience member into thinking "If she can do that, so can I", then I have done my job as a performer.

What was it about your chosen art form that drew you?
I was actually "dared" into taking a belly dance class. I thought it would be easy. Boy, was I wrong. It was something that you have to train your body for. It takes years of practice to develop the muscle memory required to become a successful belly dancer.

What has your journey to body positivity been like?
That is an easy question, my journey to body positivity has been a very "positive" experience due to my dance sisters in my belly dance troupe. We encourage and support each other, even beyond performing. We are sisters of the heart.

What, if any, impression(s) do you hope your audience walks away from your performances with?
I hope that my audience felt delighted, inspired and entertained. I hope I made them smile.

What do you want people to know about your story as it relates to participating in this project?
Well, for me it would be that you can do anything at any age. Do not let the limited perceptions of others diminish your unlimited perceptions of yourself.

#onlyjoy - Jaisan http://thenakedartisan.com/blog/2016/11/-onlyjoy---jaisan #onlyjoy - Jaisan#onlyjoy - JaisanWhat does the phrase "Body Positive" mean to you?
That I can be whoever I am and love my shape without being a size 4.

Why is performing important to you?
I love the various characters that we portray. That I can reach the audience and they see the story and feelings that I am presenting. And I can connect with them on a visceral level.

What was it about your chosen art form that drew you?
I love the colors. The connection with history, music and the connection with my fellow dancers.

What has your journey to body positivity been like?
It has been a struggle. Learning to see the positives and embrace them. Learning to not give voice to the negatives and not to let them control what I do. That negative voice can be really loud in my head. But everyday I remind myself that my mirror lies. That even though I am not the Hollywood standard I have stories to tell and I am allowed to tell them. I don't have to wait from some mythic tomorrow or "when I get in shape/When I lose weight." In fact I feel that if you have a story to tell you should tell it as it may be the thing that inspires someone else to tell their story and something great will happen because of this.

What, if any, impression(s) do you hope your audience walks away from your performances with?
Joy. I want everyone to have a sense that if there is an activity that makes them happy they should be able to share it and bring more smiles into this world. For it is far to serious a place on most days!

What do you want people to know about your story as it relates to participating in this project?
The best thing that happens is when someone comes up to me after a performance and asks if I know any teachers in their area. That now that they have seen someone with a similar body to theirs they can dance also!
